Tech #tbt time

In recent weeks, I have been employing social media’s Throwback Thursday tradition (#tbt) to share new pictures via my Instagram account of some of my older tech devices, which recently surfaced at home. I threw in a picture of myself for good measure.

#tbt: Before we had smartphones and social media — just about 10 years ago — tools for covering breaking news on the street included only news radio, police scanners, cell phones, text messages and subscription news alert services that provided users with pagers like this one. Some of these services had verified volunteers who listened to scanners and shared what they heard, perhaps in return for free subscriptions. Others may have been staffed or employed a combination of staff and volunteers. There were also alert services that provided more information with two-way radios. I found this device recently and popped in a battery but nothing happened. I guess the account expired or perhaps they no longer use this system, or both.
