Looking back at 2017

I don’t take pictures for a living anymore but I still carry a camera just about every day. Here are some of my favorite images from last year in chronological order with the captions I included on my Instagram account:

January 13: Huge waves and high tides swamped Eagle Beach in Aruba today.

February 19: Got caught up in the Wild Bohemians’ early Mardi Gras parade on South Street in Philly this afternoon.

February 20: Last week I photographed a ceremony for new grads of a job readiness and life skills program for women recently home from prison. Read more on my Facebook page or at the Philly Trib online. You can also learn more online about the organization leading this program: Mothers in Charge.

March 10: OK, those huge snowflakes falling on Philly a few minutes ago were beautiful, but they were also cold, wet and sticky. #yuck

March 25, Stamford, CT: Here’s how the audience cheered during the World Palindrome Championship a few minutes ago. #ACPT2017

April 20: We watched the Rome Marathon pass through Piazza Navona for a while this morning.

April 6, Perugia, Italy:  I just met a bilingual colleague from the conference who explained that the kneeling man is a Sicilian pilgrim who has been walking around Italy visiting churches with his cross for 26 years. The partially obscured man is his Hungarian companion on this journey. I just stumbled across this scene on a walkabout after breakfast.

April 16: Easter parade bunnies on South Street in Philly just now.

June 29, Philadelphia: I just saw the ghost of baseball past near city hall.

June 3, New York City: Fearless Girl can’t even see the bull through this crowd.

June 29: Just our annual check-in with the big bug on I-95 in Providence.

July 14: Just found this leftover from last weekend in NYC: #SeatedBallerina at #RockCenter.

June 14: Here’s another frame from #DilworthPark earlier today. The fountains were just starting up after they had been off for a while, making this perfect reflection of Philadelphia City Hall.

July 22, Philadelphia: The boats at the Independence Seaport Museum were all full of water after this evening’s downpour.

August 13: Hundreds are gathered on Thomas Paine Plaza in Philadelphia now for a vigil honoring the victims of white terrorism in #Charlottesville.

August 21:I stepped outside to find smoke drifting off the roof of a building across the street this morning, but the Philadelphia Fire Department was already on the scene and made quick work of the problem. You know I’m biased but they really know what they’re doing. I shot and filtered this with my iPhone.

August 21: I was on #DilworthPark outside Philadelphia City Hall with thousands of people taking in the first eclipse of the social media generation. #eclipse2017

August 28: Clouds aren’t keeping anybody out of the water on Clearwater Beach.

August 31: Hundreds under The El in Kensington section of Philadelphia right now for #MarchinBlack to bring awareness to opioid addiction crisis.

September 30: There have been huge murmurations of starlings on Brigantine Beach all day.

September 9: The Philly Naked Bike Ride just went around Rittenhouse Square. #pnbr #pnbr2017 #pnbr17 #phillynakedbikeride #whyilovephilly

September 11: I checked out the Tribute in Light over the September 11th Memorial in this view from Liberty State Park in New Jersey tonight. It was my first ever anniversary visit and the first time I have seen the display since 2003. Thanks Joe Kaczmarek for the inspiration to go and for the lift.

September 20: Earlier: As always, we passed Randy’s Donuts on our way to LAX. Nice to be back in Philly now.

September 23, Philadelphia: Here’s one more from the Hare Krishna celebration we spotted earlier on Eakins Oval.

September 23, Philadelphia: People are lining up to ride around on these Firefly pedicabs on the Ben Franklin Parkway tonight.

October 6, Washington: Earlier this evening. #ONA17

October 15: Hippos at the Philadelphia Zoo this morning.

October 16: What’s the fine for driving a giant duck boot on campus? Spotted just now at @templeuniv.

October 23: Now we have a giant inflatable Trump rat facing the Municipal Services Building across from Philadelphia City Hall.

October 29: And a leftover from Times Square last night.

November 10: It’s opening day for ice skaters at #DilworthPark in front of Philadelphia City Hall.

November 21, London: A passerby jeers at anti-Brexit demonstrators gathered outside the Houses of Parliament Tuesday afternoon.

November 21, London: We just stumbled upon the red carpet on Leicester Square for tonight’s premiere of #TheCrown.

November 23: A raven flies past the Tower of London. Legend has it if the ravens leave, the kingdom will fall.

November 26: We have peace signs in the Christmas tree at Philadelphia City Hall.

November 27: I know I’m late to this but I really like the new holiday light show being projected onto Philadelphia City Hall. Why don’t we light up more buildings more often?

November 30:Countless signatures cover #FreeMeek / #JusticeForMeek posters by artist Mark G as pedestrians walk past 15th and Chestnut in Center City Philadelphia this afternoon.

December 5, Philadelphia: From this morning: Last weekend’s neighborhood leave cleanup was probably too soon.

December 15: Snow starts to stick on a side street Friday afternoon in the Center City section of Philadelphia.
