A woman walks out of a Philadelphia check cashing story as police move in after a botched robbery in 1997. It only appears that the the gun is pointed at her because I was using a telephoto lens which can compress several layers of information. Painting Billy Penn

A painter works from a footbridge near the Philadelphia Museum of Art in 1998. A statue of William Penn stands atop Philadelphia City Hall, seen at left, but a lot of Philadelphians find this perspective unfortunate because the scroll in Penn’s hand at his side can appear to be something else. Shooting in Swampoodle

I spent Friday night riding around the Philadelphia with local news photographer Joe Kaczmarek. I am researching in preparation to produce a documentary on the crisis of gun crime in Philly and similar cities.
We went to the scene where a man had been found lying in the street, shot several times in the Swampoodle section of North Philadelphia. Nothing had changed in the three years since I covered crimes scenes on these streets.
Its time for a change.
